M U C - issue no.1 "WIESN" - by Paul Joyce

May 16, 2018

Zines are a fantastic way of promoting a photographic series by easily wrapping images and text together into a small magazine or event simple book. It connects images to give them a broader and more cohesive background. The tool of storytellers and creative minds.

Just recently [Paul Joyce][1], an English photographer living in Germany, sent me a very beautifully made zine called MUC. I was immediately hooked by the beautiful layout the smart yet simple idea and the compelling images. Paul agreed to answer some questions regarding the zine and his creative journey as a photographer and aspiring publisher.

Preparing for the Exhibition - Part II

April 6, 2018

Matting

Framing is an art form and not only because it requires some skills to frame a photography in order to look good without dust or lint on the picture, extensive knowledge about material and the process is required to do it 100% correctly. Conservatory framing requires material of archival quality. But all this is only true if you plan to present the artwork in the frame for a long time period. Exhibitions often dońt require this amount of effort and investment. Nevertheless I want my photographs to be presented in the best possible manner, therefore some care was required to do the matting and framing correctly.

Preparing for the Exhibition - Part I

The Concept for The Between The Light Exhibition in Freiburg

I was super thrilled and excited when I learned that I will have the opportunity to exhibit my work in Freiburg in the the Bahnhofsturm. This excitement lasted for almost and hour until I realized how many challenges this will bring along. Of course we all want to go out and show the world how good we are, what fine images we take, but then again, do we really make photographs that matter? Who wants to see them? With the excitement the doubts came simultaneously.

New Analog Prints from MeinFilmLab - Test

May 19, 2017

C-prints from @MeinFilmLab

I have written about MeinFilmLab before and I personally have a lot of respect of what the team around Jörg Bergs has achieved over the last two years. The lab was literally established from scratch and what began in his basement has now grown to a already renown photolab that offers a complete workflow for the modern analog photographer. I don´t know the exact numbers but I would not be surprised if the MFL already handles the big amount of analog film development in Germany. But who cares about numbers. As we all know, the photographic workflow needs a final output which is in most cases a print. While we are often happy with displaying photos on our smart phones and tablets, there is a certain fascination of a physical print.

Making a digital black & white Master Print from a negative (PartII)

February 1, 2016

The Digital "Master-Print-File"

In the previous part of this installment we have discussed how we get a flat scan from black and white film in Silverfast 8.8. In the second part of this series we concentrate on the creative process of taking a flat and lifeless scan to a wonderful black & white master print. While we should normally never constrain our creative freedom, I still suggest we try to maintain a believable plausibility, which means we want to maintain the characteristic of the medium. A photograph should be identified as one and as we have already made the effort of shooting film, we want to maintain the beauty of this medium in the final master file. The easiest way of doing this is by replicating the tools a darkroom printer uses when creating a print. Of course we use these techniques digitally. Good care needs to be taken to avoid digital artifacts and a digital look. This is not as easy as it sounds, as digital tools can easily make their marks. We do our best to avoid these marks.

Printing scans from a Kodak Pakon F135 Scanner

How big can you print from 6 Mega-pixel files

I was never happy with how my Epson V700 scanned 35mm film. Don´t get me wrong, it is not bad, but in the end it is a massive pain to mount and scan a whole roll of 35mm film. On my search for a new scanner, I came across many suitable solutions from dedicated film scanners to small minilab scanners like a Noritsu LS-600 or the Kodak Pakon F135+. Chatting on Twitter about the benefits of each scanner I decided to go for a Pakon F135. Mike Poulit was kind enough to answer all my Pakon related questions. Finally I could not resist any longer and I ordered a Pakon F135 non-plus version from AAA image solutions in the US.

From Scan to Print, a workflow example

I just recently received these wonderful Fuji Frontier scans from the "Mein Film Lab" in Germany and I was immediately hooked by the shot I took during sunset at a lovely hidden beach at the "Lagoo Maggiore".

Soon I decided to explore whether I could make similar scans at home with my Epson V700 scanner and Silverfast 8. Here is brief explanation of my workflow:
