Preparing for the Exhibition - Part II

April 6, 2018

Matting

Framing is an art form and not only because it requires some skills to frame a photography in order to look good without dust or lint on the picture, extensive knowledge about material and the process is required to do it 100% correctly. Conservatory framing requires material of archival quality. But all this is only true if you plan to present the artwork in the frame for a long time period. Exhibitions often dońt require this amount of effort and investment. Nevertheless I want my photographs to be presented in the best possible manner, therefore some care was required to do the matting and framing correctly.

The Concept for The Between The Light Exhibition in Freiburg

I was super thrilled and excited when I learned that I will have the opportunity to exhibit my work in Freiburg in the the Bahnhofsturm. This excitement lasted for almost and hour until I realized how many challenges this will bring along. Of course we all want to go out and show the world how good we are, what fine images we take, but then again, do we really make photographs that matter? Who wants to see them? With the excitement the doubts came simultaneously.

New Analog Prints from MeinFilmLab - Test

May 19, 2017

C-prints from @MeinFilmLab

I have written about MeinFilmLab before and I personally have a lot of respect of what the team around Jörg Bergs has achieved over the last two years. The lab was literally established from scratch and what began in his basement has now grown to a already renown photolab that offers a complete workflow for the modern analog photographer. I don´t know the exact numbers but I would not be surprised if the MFL already handles the big amount of analog film development in Germany. But who cares about numbers. As we all know, the photographic workflow needs a final output which is in most cases a print. While we are often happy with displaying photos on our smart phones and tablets, there is a certain fascination of a physical print.

How big can you print from 6 Mega-pixel files

I was never happy with how my Epson V700 scanned 35mm film. Don´t get me wrong, it is not bad, but in the end it is a massive pain to mount and scan a whole roll of 35mm film. On my search for a new scanner, I came across many suitable solutions from dedicated film scanners to small minilab scanners like a Noritsu LS-600 or the Kodak Pakon F135+. Chatting on Twitter about the benefits of each scanner I decided to go for a Pakon F135. Mike Poulit was kind enough to answer all my Pakon related questions. Finally I could not resist any longer and I ordered a Pakon F135 non-plus version from AAA image solutions in the US.
