Exploring the Heart of Venice

March 8, 2024

A Late Winter Afternoon Stroll through San Polo and San Croce

As I embarked on a late winter afternoon walk through the enchanting districts of San Polo and San Croce in Venice, I couldn't help but feel captivated by the city's timeless allure. Venice, often referred to as the "City of Canals," is a place where every corner tells a story, where history and beauty intertwine effortlessly.

Rose-Red City in Jordan's Desert

January 12, 2022

Petra Jordan

It is probably the most famous place in Jordan and one of the most spectacular ancient sites on the planet. Nobody really knows when exactly this magical and legendary city was built but its history traces back to thousands of years ago when this place used to be a thriving metropolis. Today it belongs to the "New 7 Wonders of the World".

T H F Berlin Tempelhof

July 19, 2019

It was cloudy evening in on January 2nd 1967 when Pan American flight PA619 silently emerged into the dark clouds over Berlin. The short flight from Hamburg was almost on time when the air traffic controller cleared the Boeing 727 jet to intercept the final approach course for runway 27L. The flight in the northern corridor along NORTH ROUTE 1 over the Soviet sector of Eastern Germany was uneventful. When the captain lowered the landing gear the plane broke out of the clouds and the lights of Berlin were visible to the passengers and cockpit crew. The flight smoothly landed and taxied to the terminal.

It could have been very similar to this fictious description in the old days of the legendary Berlin Tempelhof airfield, from which the renowned architect Sir Norman Foster once said it was the mother of all modern airports

Rhodes II

June 5, 2018

I am a brazen maiden lying here
Upon the tomb of Midas. And as long
As water flows, as trees are green with leaves,
As the sun shines and eke the silver moon,
As long as rivers flow, and billows roar,
So long will I upon this much wept tomb,
Tell passers by, "Midas" lies buried here.

[from the inscription of the thumb of Midas]

*according to Diogenes Laertius written by the Greek poet Cleobulus of Lindos, one of the Seven Sages of Greece

Point Reyes

January 21, 2018

The search for serenity at the pacific coast of the Marin Headlands

The deep sound of the fog horn hits my ears while I am driving across the Golden Gate Bridge. My mind is filled with excitement and I devoutly enjoy the fascinating view when the bridge appears from the fog that silently lays over the bay. With every mile I drive, I get further away from the bustling city towards the safe haven of the Point Reyes National Seashore at the roaring coastline of Marin County.

The Brave and the Bold

July 14, 2017

It is warm and humid. The rain showers in the morning included some strong thunderstorms, but now the rain is gone and I am waiting in the lobby of my hotel in Delhi. India has always been fascinating, a place full of strong and bold impressions. The summer is hot here and during winter people often fight the cold especially during the night. The harsh and diverse environmental conditions influence their daily life. I am heading for the INA market, an accumulation of many stands that form a huge open market. It will be a short documentary project that shows how people live here in Delhi.

The City Inside The City

January 18, 2017

In the middle of Singapore's Business District lies the busy and very interesting neighborhood of Tanjong Pagar. The name is Malay and means "cape of stakes". It was once an enclave for Chinese and Indian dock workers and has become a colorful and multifaceted district. In the middle of this neighborhood you find Tanjong Pagar Plaza, a small shopping and merchant site that accommodates the huge housing and apartment complex provided by the Housing and Development Board (HDB).

Tiger Striped Skies

November 25, 2016

Tiger Striped Skies

My new series showing the cultural and social contrasts in a contemporary Asian city. Modern architecture is dominating the cityscape, but between the fascinating buildings, we find traces of human life. The cold and clean architectural masterpieces surround various social communities and all the people who are living here, sharing the place and adapting to the new challenges.

Aegean Spring in Rhodes

Spring 2016
photos - Sebastian Schlueter

Beauty of course is subjective, but standing at beaches wide and open or small and fissured, looking at the light blue sea and breathing the lightly salted air that comes with the wind from the Mediterranean Sea, it is very hard to imagine somebody not being moved by the beauty of this island. The landscape is rough and rugged, but the recent rain over the winter months scattered many green trees and bushes all over the island. On the southeast coast there is a small village called Lindos that lies neatly below the big Acropolis. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Rhodes. The small white houses of the village cover the hills around the Paul´s Bay. Walking inside the narrow alleys gives me the feeling that this place has been here forever. Spring is special here in Rhodes, the streets are still empty and quiet. It is a time of change. People are getting ready for the tourists to arrive.

Berlin

March 30, 2016

A perfect weekend in Berlin...

Strolling through the streets of Berlin, exploring hidden backyard and experiencing the spirit of this exciting city, has been a big pleasure. If you only have two nights, you need to choose wisely where to go. We decided to only do very little sight-seeing and visit other more typical places instead. This was more difficult than we thought as all the important monuments were so close to our hotel. Stepping outside the lobby we have been in the middle of everything. After some great cakes and wonderful coffee at Quchnia we felt ready to climb the stairs up the French Dome at the "Gendarmen Markt". Our reward was a mind blowing sunset over the terrific skyline of Berlin.

"Exploring Hong Kong" - An analog Film Photo Story

December 16, 2015

Stories from an analog adventure

First time in Hong Kong, first time with my new camera and nothing but several rolls of Kodak TriX in my pocket. I was excited and thrilled to explore the city.

Before I went on my flight to Hong Kong I really thought long about what camera to take on this trip. The decision just to take my new Yashica Electro 35 GSN was not easy. I expected many shooting possibilities and day and night. Nevertheless the city has been captured million times on photographs so I thought committing to black and white film was a good idea. I did not expect to come back home with something exciting or new, I just wanted to explore the city and capturing photographs on film. Well that is what I did.
