It was cloudy evening in on January 2nd 1967 when Pan American flight PA619 silently emerged into the dark clouds over Berlin. The short flight from Hamburg was almost on time when the air traffic controller cleared the Boeing 727 jet to intercept the final approach course for runway 27L. The flight in the northern corridor along NORTH ROUTE 1 over the Soviet sector of Eastern Germany was uneventful. When the captain lowered the landing gear the plane broke out of the clouds and the lights of Berlin were visible to the passengers and cockpit crew. The flight smoothly landed and taxied to the terminal.
It could have been very similar to this fictious description in the old days of the legendary Berlin Tempelhof airfield, from which the renowned architect Sir Norman Foster once said it was the mother of all modern airports

With an early digital background I almost exclusively took analog night images over the last couple of years. I was really embracing the lovely look of Kodak Portra that could reveal the details in the shadow of almost any scene and still convey the beauty of a night scene. The natural and aesthetically pleasing look of the final image never drew me back to my clumsy trials getting something similar from digital. But over the years not only the capabilities of digital cameras improved but also my approach to post processing changed. Time to revisit digital night photography.

One of the coolest new features of the latest generation of Fujifilm x-series cameras is certainly the Fujifilm Acros black and white film simulation. On my last trip to Hong Kong I tested this simulation a bit. The Fujifilm engineers put a lot of effort into the algorithm for this film profile. The tonal value distribution is very specific and is providing wonderful black and white images.

Beauty of course is subjective, but standing at beaches wide and open or small and fissured, looking at the light blue sea and breathing the lightly salted air that comes with the wind from the Mediterranean Sea, it is very hard to imagine somebody not being moved by the beauty of this island. The landscape is rough and rugged, but the recent rain over the winter months scattered many green trees and bushes all over the island. On the southeast coast there is a small village called Lindos that lies neatly below the big Acropolis. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Rhodes. The small white houses of the village cover the hills around the Paul´s Bay. Walking inside the narrow alleys gives me the feeling that this place has been here forever. Spring is special here in Rhodes, the streets are still empty and quiet. It is a time of change. People are getting ready for the tourists to arrive.

It is like traveling back in time, back to those days where individuality was common and Hotel chains have not yet been invented. Read MoreSnow-covered mountains stand up against the horizon of the Lake Constance. It is one of those beautiful late summer days in Southern Germany right at the border to Austria. Looking across the Lake Constance we see the Alpine mountains fading in the haze. Standing at the bottom of the 35 meter lighthouse makes me think about the importance of such and impressive monument. It reliably guided sailors for over 150 years into the safe harbor of the small island. The lake is often covered with shallow fog making this iconic landmark of the city of Lindau not only a beautiful but also important facility. Climbing up the many stairs to the small platform will be rewarded by the stunning view over the Alpine mountains. All the small boats peacefully sailing on the lake silently moving below me. It ́s an impressive moment, full of desire, hope and awe of the breathtaking scenery.
